My kitten Greymalkin is missing. I've looked for her everywhere in the Hufflepuff rooms, but I can't find her. I know she'd snuck out of our common room once before, but someone brought her back. She's been missing for a couple days now, and I'm getting really worried!

Grey with white socks. Please let me or any of the Hufflepuff prefects know if you see her!!!

Anne Cadwallader's cat had a litter, and they're old enough to leave their mother now, and so now I have the most darling little grey cat with white socks. I love her so much. She's very active, always batting balls of crumpled parchment around and stalking the dangling tassles of the bed curtains and pouncing on Megan's slippers when we get up in the morning (those pompoms on the slippers are just irresistable). But she's also happy to be a lap kitty when she collapses, worn out from all the play. There's nothing as cosy as a purring kitten on your lap when you're doing revising. I've put out a little basket on top of my trunk for her, but she prefers to sleep right at the foot of my bed.

I'm still trying to decide on a name for her. My roommates all like her, which is a relief. Eloise grumbles that we'll all get cat hairs over everything, but she snuck up a saucer of milk for her last night, so I know she doesn't mind too much.
alt_hannah: (What?)
Oooh, I just HATE that Padma Patil. I just loathe the way she queens it over EVERYONE, sticking her nose up in the air just because she's--you know. Who she is. And making all those little spiteful comments, all in the hopes of making everyone else feel wretched. She made the nastiest comment in my journal to me, just because Linus Moon asked me to fix the hem of his costume.

She's so utterly...poisonous.

Honestly, no wonder they have her playing the snake! She doesn't even need costume fangs. She's already got her own.

I know, Megan, I know, I know. She's a purebred, so we have to be polite. But, oooo, sometimes I just want to tear her hair out!

Costumes

Who can think about schoolwork this week? (Sorry, but it's true. I did do my essay for Potions class for tomorrow, but I'm afraid I wrote a LOT larger than I usually do, to make it come out to the right number inches.) Besides the extra rehearsals, some of us are busy getting costumes ready, which turned out to be a much bigger job than I think we all realised it would be. Well, perhaps it's because I think Karoline Moon started with a simpler vision of what the costumes would be like at first, but as the play has developed we've gotten rather ambitious! We want it all to look as life-like and realistic as possible, especially since we're depicting so many real life people.

Some of those charms we learned about in the Sisters of the Protectorate (about altering clothing and so on) certainly are turning out useful. I think I really have the hang of dying charms now, since Megan and I had to fiddle so long to get that rich purple colour of the robes exactly right. It started out more like a burgundy, and then it was lavender and then fuschia, and Megan was almost screaming with frustration before we were done, but they all look perfect now.

(Can you BELIEVE that some people still don't quite know all their lines? I won't mention any names, but they'd better buckle down and LEARN THEM! The big day is Saturday!)

Well, new to me, anyway. It's an older model Clean Sweep that Dad got last week by trading. Goodness knows I've no need for a fancy racing-type broom, and this will suit me beautifully. And I won't be drifting over to the left anymore!

John really has his nose out of joint about it, though. He wants a broom, and of course eight year olds think they can handle ANYTHING, even if their Mums say 'No.' Which, of course, Mum does.

Mum and I went shopping for spring robes today. And other things. Nothing quite fits me anymore because I've shot up this year and my and I need new things from the skin outward. Chessie got dragged along and she moaned and complained the whole time, which was so tiresome and I was afraid after awhile that Mum would lose her temper entirely and not take us out for lunch like she had promised. But fortunately, Mum was so glad that we found just what I needed (and better yet that the robes weren't too expensive), that she took us to Tulips, which was certainly more than I would have hoped for! Eloise and Susan and Megan, have you ever been there? We should maybe get together to have tea there sometime, before school starts again. They have really wonderful cauldron cakes.

Everyone is ever so cross and tired of winter. Even the play rehearsals seem like a tiresome slog (sorry Moon and Clearwater, but it's true). I keep lingering behind in the greenhouses after Herbology class, because it's such a relief to see something live and green, even if it's just Venomous Tentacula or fretful baby Mandrakes. I actually used one of my free periods this week to help Professor Sprout set out seedlings, just because I'm so sick of bare earth and mud and wanted to do something to help the flowers come faster.

Susan and Megan, anyone up for Exploding Snap? Eloise isn't interested.

The play!

Yesterday afternoon was the first rehearsal, so it was the first read through. It was also the first meeting for the production crew, just to let people know the sorts of things they'll have to do. Meghan and Eloise are still rather cross that they didn't get a part, not even in the chorus/Wizengamot like Susan and I did, but it sounds as though the stage crew will have plenty to do, preparing costumes, scrounging up and making props and the like.

It was quite interesting to hear the play for the first time. We've studied the events in History of Magic, of course, but still I didn't know about some of the events depicted. It was really quite moving and thrilling. A few of the girls were actually sniffling a little at the end of Act 1.

Some of the people cast are already so good! (Terrence Higgs, for example, as Mr Malfoy! And Electra Bobolis, I'm sure, will just be fabulous as Mrs Lestrange.)(Well, and some are so bad, mispronouncing everything, but I won't name names there. They'll certainly have time to improve.)

But the best part was probably the look on Ronald Weasley's face when he realised for the first time that he actually had to sing.

It's going to be ever so much fun.

Sue and Megan, after you left for breakfast, I found Eloise crying in the loo. She'd tried a potion for her spots, but she must have done the formula wrong somehow, and oh, her face is such a mess! It's sloughed her skin off entirely in polka dots and it's oozing this icky purple--well, take my word for it. It's awful. She's crying so hard but she's afraid to be seen, and it's going to take awhile to calm her down and get her to the hospital wing.

Megan, could you please put wrap some toast and maybe some sausage in a napkin and sneak it into your bookbag for me and bring it to me before Divination?

We'll all have to be especially nice to her tonight.

I could just hex whoever did those lists.

So busy!

I swear that my assignment notebook has a hex on it or something. Every time I look in it, the assignments seem to have doubled. I have so much to do before the holidays! Part of the problem is that I got so stuck in my last two or three projects in Arithmancy. I'm sure Professor Vector must have thought I was such a dunce and wondered what I was doing in her class! But after I did so badly on the last quiz, I went to see her to go over where I got my answers wrong. I think I understand polynumeral equations a little better. Thank goodness. I finally finished my potion essay, too. I made the mistake of changing my mind about which topic to write about. At first I was going to do it on alkaline fixatives, but all the books I wanted to use as resources were checked out of the library, and so I ended up tearing up my parchment in frustration and scribbling something in a hurry about the properties of foxglove. I hope Professor Slughorn can read my handwriting.

It's hard to concentrate because everyone's getting rather excited about Christmas. Aren't the decorations beautiful this year? Every time I see the spruce and holly boughs go up on the staircases and the Christmas trees start to go up in the Great Hall, I start to get a little homesick.

The YPL meeting was quite interesting today, wasn't it? And a little creepy, frankly. I learned more about dementors than I expected. Ugh, I know the Ministry of Magic finds them useful, but I hope to never get near one of them again.

I've been working on my Christmas presents, but I've finally decided I just don't have time to make them all this year. I have a bit more pocket money than usual, so I hope to do some shopping in Hogsmeade next weekend.

(Susan, have you mastered those housekeeping charms Professor Acton assigned us to learn? I can't get the dusting charm right. It starts out all right, but no matter what I do, the feather duster keeps flicking all the dust right up my nostrils. I almost sneezed my head off after dinner.)
alt_hannah: (Default)
Happy birthday, Ernie! All your housemates wish you very happy returns of the day.
alt_hannah: (Hannah sideways)
Good news! Eloise got her owl inviting her to join the Sisters in Witchcraft, too, at breakfast this morning! I guess that her guardian was just a little late about letting her know about it. That means that all four of us got in. I'm so happy, because it would have been SO awkward if it had just been three of us.

Have any of you heard who else got in? I think Katrina Bundy is another one. I'm so curious about the sorts of things we'll do at the meetings, although Su Li thinks maybe they'll teach us about some of the more advanced household charms, which would certainly be useful.

Mrs Malfoy is supposed to be involved with organising everything. I've been curious to see her, since she's in the papers so much. She's ever so elegant! I wonder if she'll ever come to any of the meetings.
alt_hannah: (Default)
Well, I was going to say we're here in New London, but of course, I live here anyway. When I'm not at school, I mean. But I mean we're here for our turn at the YPL week. It's wonderful to see my roommates again.

They're not having us room together, though. Just like last year's camping trip, they're shuffling people around so we're not going to be sharing rooms with our roommates from our own House. I've been put with Katrina Bundy and Mandy Brocklehurst. Our suite at the Horseguards in Whitehall is ever so posh! After we had put our things away, we went to see the inspection of the guard, which is held every day at 4:00. They explained that the muggle queen Victoria once came to the gate but none of the guards were there as they were supposed to be because they were all drunk! (Which just goes to show you how undependable Muggles are, I suppose). So she ordered that the guard hold an inspection at 4:00 every day for the next 100 years. Well, the hundred years has come and gone, and of course we don't have kings or queens anymore, but the guard still holds their inspection at 4:00 every day, except that now it's to honour the Lord Protector instead. And of course, since the Lord Protector is charged with protecting the Realm, and all His citizens, it's symbolic to continue the tradition, do you see? It was ever so impressive to see the ceremony and to think that it has been done exactly that way for years and years! Su Li said that it must be very difficult for the guards to wear those uniforms in the summer heat, but they stood straight and still as anything, and you couldn't tell at all that they felt the least bit uncomfortable.

We had a lovely welcoming Feast, quite as nice as the Welcome Feast at Hogwarts, and we were supposed to have a walk along the Thames to see the fairylights, but unfortunately, it's raining rather hard, a perfect downpour. So we're staying inside instead, which is a bit of a disappointment, but Professor Sinistra is telling us about all the treats we have in store this week. And of course, we've read everything that the last group had to say in their journals. We're all so excited!

They're telling us lights out now because we have a big day tomorrow, so I'll close for now.

Summer

The summer feels like its flying by already. Susan, I got your letter! I'm sorry I haven't written back before now, but I wanted to wait until I finished The Secret Silver Owl before sending it back to you. You were right. It was just wonderful! I can't wait until her next one comes out. Do you think that she'll have Peter and Jenny end up together or not? I can't make up my mind. Anyway, I'm sending you an owl to return the book, and I've included Hepzibah Harkness's newest mystery. Let me know what you think!

Mum has so busy with the store that I haven't seen her much. Dad says we should be thankful, because it means business on Diagon Alley is picking up again. It was so slow, of course, with Black's epidemic. Still, I wish I could see her more than just early in the morning and right before I have to go to bed.

Daddy finished the testing for the next level of his potion licence. He's decided he's not going to try to test for the one beyond that, though (the level just below Potions Master). He thinks it would cost too it's too much work, and he doesn't need it to work at St Mungo's anyway.

What does everyone think of the newest from Playing Quidditch With Hags? Daddy hates it, and he won't let Chessie or me play it if he's in the house, but otherwise we play it every chance we get. I think they're almost as good as Seven-Eighths Pure. I expecially like the song 'Into the Clear Blue.' Chessie likes 'Hebridean Purple,' but the drums are too loud on that one for me.

I'm missing the food at Hogwarts, I'll admit. I haven't had pudding once since we left school.

There's an extra early edition of the paper this morning! Did everyone see?

Sirius Black has been CAPTURED!
alt_hannah: (Default)
It probably wasn't a Slytherin.

Well, unless they're trying to throw everybody off by insulting themselves.

Myrtle

Well, I just met the famous Moaning Myrtle. She was alright. But she was crying most of the time and when she wasn't crying she was yelling at me for disturbing her peace. Weird.
alt_hannah: (Default)
Megan- You are always happy to see me and you never run out of things to say. You showed me how good peppermint tea is.

Susan- You always are wearing something purple (like a sock...) and something mismatched (again I say a sock...). You are quiet but easy to be around.

Eloise- You love the weird sisters just like me. You also love to do the funniest imitations.

Thank you for being my dorm mates.

I know you lot are going to ask me a lot of questions, but please don't. Yes, I was sitting right next to Wayne, but I didn't really hear what he said to Professor Carrow, because I was digging in my book bag. And then suddenly, Wayne was down on the floor. He was jerking, and when I looked into his eyes--he was looking right up at me, it was . . .

He was making these choking sounds. I can still hear them.

And then Professor Carrow stopped. And he just continued with the lesson, like nothing had happened. Megan was crying. I was too scared to even cry. Wayne's nose was bleeding, but he just lay there on the floor. Nobody knew what to do. The Professor asked a question--don't even remember what it was. Nobody said anything. The Professor looked around, and he didn't even get angry that no one was trying answer. He was just smiling.

And then the bell rang, and Ernie helped Wayne up off the floor. And we all filed out. Just like every other class.
alt_hannah: (So serious)
I was walking down by the greenhouses this afternoon and I decided to duck in to check on the knotgrass we had planted yesterday. I was a little curious to see if it had sprouted yet, because Professor Sprout says it's one of the fastest seeds to sprout . I was bending over a pot when a spiky red plant grabbed my foot! I shouted for help and Professor Sprout was luckily nearby and came over. She helped unwind it from my ankle.

I'm not going in the greenhouses alone again!
alt_hannah: (Default)
Hey guess what! I got the Weird Sisters' latest: "Fire Inside the Dragon."  Susan didn't want me to put my Weird Sisters poster up, but Eloise totally loves the Weird Sisters, too, and so us two persuaded Susan to let us put it up between our two beds.  (Megan didn't really care, because she collects Quidditch posters instead.)  The room is starting to feel like home now.

I want a familiar--maybe a cat.  Then I could have cat hair on my bedspread, like Eloise does.
